2005 AAA Lower Mainland Preview

The Lower Mainland is a tough zone to compete in for AAA. The Lower Mainland playoffs features the Top 16 teams from the regions of Burnaby/New West, Richmond, Van Central, Van East, Van West, and Independents.

Burnaby/New West

Projected Finish:
1. Burnaby South Rebels (Burnaby)
2. Burnaby Central (Burnaby)
3. New Westminster (New Westminster)
4. Alpha Aztecs (Burnaby)
5. Burnaby North (Burnaby)
6. Burnaby Mountain (Burnaby)

The Burnaby South Rebels have a solid group of young talent playing Varsity this year. With New West graduating their talented Seniors from last year, the division is wide open. The Top 3 teams advance to the LM Playoffs. Although the Burnaby/New West division will be competitive, no Provincial berths are expected from this group this year.

Richmond

Projected Finish:
1. Hugh Boyd Trojans
2. R.C. Palmer Griffins
3. J.N. Burnett Breakers
4. Richmond Colts
5. Steveston Packers
6. H.J. Cambie Crusaders
7. McMath Wildcats
8. C.E. London Legends
9. Hugh McRoberts Strikers
10. McNair Marlins
11. Richmond Christian Eagles

Palmer played as AA last year but could choose to play AAA this year with the talented team they are expected to field this year. Hugh Boyd was a couple of wins shy of making the Provincial tournament last year. Alex White is expected to be back for the Trojans. Palmer, Burnett and Richmond High are the next contenders. The Top 4 teams advance to the LM Playoffs, from there expect 1 maybe 2 Provincial berths from Richmond this year.

Vancouver Top 10

Projected Finish:
1. Kitsilano Blue Demons
2. Killarney Cougars
3. Lord Byng Grey Ghosts
4. Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs
5. Prince of Wales Whalesmen
6. Point Grey Greyhounds
7. King George Dragons
8. Magee Lions
9. Templeton Titans
10. Van Tech Talisman

Kits is always the powerhouse in the VSSAA. Niko Cochran, Paul Woodham, and Ty Nurse are more than enough to allow them to finish first. Many expect Kits to contend for the Provincial Title this year, preseason rankings have the Blue Demons as high as #3. Killarney returns Tony Otim and should contend this year as well. The Top 8 teams from the Central, East and West divisions qualify for LM playoffs. Sleeper teams to watch out for are Lord Byng and Prince of Wales. Byng has good size and PW has some good young talent. Kitsilano and Killarney are expected to earn Provincial berths.

Independent

Only 2 teams competed as AAA last year, should be the same this year. Vancouver College Fighting Irish and St. Georges Saints will play a best of 3 playoffs to determine the lone spot from the Independent league in the LM playoffs. The St. Georges Saints are widely considered the favorite to win the Provincial Title this year. Bol Kong and Alex Murphy lead the Saints and have been to the Big Dance before.

Projected Provincial berths: St. Georges, Kitsilano, Killarney, Hugh Boyd, Palmer

Looks pretty good. A tough zone to predict.

Magee #5 Hunter is much better and will have more impact than Sunny.
PW #6 See above.
KG #7
Does PG even have a coach yet?

Richmond might be higher in Richmmond League with new recruits.

Last couple of spots for provincials will be difficult to predict. Coaches ebe and disbrow at Palmer and Richmond have plenty of experience, look for boyd to have a dissapointing season. Do the Richmond teams have the size to compete with Lord Byng?

Also if they do not it will be a close one between Richmond teams and Churchill. Disbrow vs. Lopez....identical style of play except Lopez will use zone presses as well. Ref better be in good shape for that one.

I'd love to see Churchill do well but no size=no provincials.
I don't think King George will be as good as 7th, they have NO scorers that will make an impact. I think Magee will most definitly be better than projected. I think Byng will suprise alot of teams maybe even Killarney.

who does churchill have other than blake
their team last yr was complete shit

and hugh boyd will mos def not finsih first LOl thats a joke, they have no1 other than alex white

havnt seen burnaby south in a while but they shoudl be pradtising hard and have a lot of team chemistry

magee should switch places with byng in the rankings

There is no way in hell PW, Point Grey and King George will place higher than Byng. Magee should mos def be higher with Hunter and A. Mah, but switch places with Byng I think not.

PW has one skilled guard and no gr 12 team last year. Point Grey is poor and has no coach. King George lost to Byng by 40 points in Spring League (that's running time) it would have been 60 in a real game.

And yes, I agree that Boyd will not place 1st nor will they make provincials.

i dont think your richmonds very accurate. Richmond High will be very good this year.Thier only problem is they have no size at all.Palmer and Burnett are mainly gr 11 teams so i think there year will be nxt year, and Hugh Boyd should be a solid team.
I think finals=rhs vs boyd

how about making previews 4 the junior teams in each division just like you did ith the seniors. That would be great

magee is huge this year should be #3

Do you mean that Magee is "huge" in talent or size?

Either way I disagree. Hunter is a very good player. A. Mah is a solid player. They don't have anything else.

As for size, they are smaller than Kits and Byng and Killarney. They are bigger than Churchill.

1. Kits
2. Byng/Killarney
3. Killarney/Byng
4. Magee
5. Churchill
6. PW
7. Britania
8. King Geroge
9. Point Grey
10. Doesn't matter

byng will go to provincials, there size will beat out Killarneys, and there guards will shut down tony(there only scoring threat) byng and kits outta vancouver!

Yes coach Acob has experience but you cannot compare both the amount of experience and success levels to ebe and disbrow. Talk to me in 25 years and maybe we'll discuss.

Only thing Jon has on Bill Disbrow is that he is not as predictable. Disbrows game plan has not changed in 20 years, and does not change regardless of who he plays.

Burnett has a bright future with two athletic players, but give me one top 40 team in the province who doesn't. Also the two athletic players are in grade 11 and lack experience.

Burnett Juniors were clobbered by Byng's juniors last year. Byng was ranked for the majority of last year as juniors. That being said, Byng will be average this year due to lack of experience....Burnett's growing pains should be even worse...less height, less depth.

1. RHS
2. Palmer
3. Boyd
4. Burnett

Despite a resurgence in basketball in Richmond I'd be willing to bet these teams don't have the size to deal with Vancouver teams and Saints. They're in for a tough Lowermainland tournament.

well said well said. should be an interesting year for the lower mainlands once again

HOW can you rank Burnaby South ahead of Central thats just absolutely ridiculous I don't even know what to say about that.

Byng declared to go to AAA.

burnett srs will b better for you idiots who think they will do worse, last yr they didnt have gaurds, only 2 solid big men with no1 to give them the ball
3 of the 5 starters ar gr 12s so i dunno why you would say they are inexpierenced

byng's gaurds will NOT shut down tony who is not their only scoring option but byng will have large size advantage on many teams

dunno much abotu churchill but they have no good gr 11s

boyd will NOT finish on top

andy on pw seemed to have improved a lot, if they can get their act together when the season comes they may contend

magee has solid team chemistry but lack inside the key

mark my words as facts

Sorry (probably Burnett person)

I was under the impression that the key players for you were the two slashing type players from last years junior team. Most people are under the impression that most of the points will come from the gr. 11's. Aparently I was wrong. Didn't mean to offend you.

Nevertheless I still feel

1.RHS
2.Palmer
3.Boyd
4.Burnett

This is not to be disrespectful to your team...all of these teams are decent and closely matched. At least we agree that Boyd won't finish first.

Also, Churchill should be strong as well as Magee. Both teams have some senior skill as well as good coaching.

PW will not contend for a City Championship or Lowermainlands or Provincials. They would need 3 more sunnys and perhaps 4 more andys (if he has improved) just to be in a race for 3rd place in Vancouver with Magee, Churchill and Byng. And yes, Byngs guards will not contain Tony.

Place PW in a category with KG and Brit...1 good player no support , no seniors.

At 8:26 PM, December 06, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

pw has beaten magee in scrimmage and at capilano team camp with only their gr 11s

they also beat burnett at hsbc

so to place them on the same level as kg and brit? i dont think so, and they are not a one man team sunny barely gets at most 10 -15 a game, their skill is evenly matched

but for sure will not contend for city championships or lowermainland provincials

At 5:11 PM, December 13, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

hmmm.

you're right. PW isn't at the same level as Brit...they're lower cause they lost to them.

At 12:12 AM, December 17, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

wow pw beat brit by 20 that was an ars kicking

At 6:37 PM, December 19, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

lost by 1 , then won by 30 in suth tourny

At 9:01 PM, December 20, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sorry lost by 4 in league....which will likely eliminate them from a second seed in vancouver cities (assuming PW beats brit in the second league game) which means they will face kits or wc early in the playoffs....leading to a low finish in cities = low seed in LM's = shit kicking first round.

Then second error..won by 18 in Sutherland tourney.

Silly to gloat over a win like that...almost as silly as the Magee guys gloating over beating Hamber by such a large amount.

Bench should have been in early in those games.

At 6:42 PM, December 29, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

im pretty sure pw wont have to play kits or wc first round unless they finish last in their pool

At 1:42 AM, January 01, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

learn to read....I said early in the playoffs. Kits and WC will have byes 1st round
