2005 AAA Vancouver Island Preview
Several top teams from the Island this year figure to contend come the Provincial Tournament. Only the top 3 teams are awarded berths to the Provincial Tournament so competition will be fierce. Last season, Wellington rode their ticket all the way to the Final game of the Tournament losing out to WRCA.
Vancouver Island North
Projected Finish:
1. G.P. Vanier Towhees (Courtenay)
2. Wellington Wildcats (Nanaimo)
3. Dover Bay Dolphins (Nanaimo)
4. Cowichan Thunderbirds (Duncan)
5. Ballenas Whalers (Parksville)
6. Alberni District Armada (Port Alberni)
The Vanier Towhees feature one of the best all-around players in BC in Calvin Westbrook. A member of several Provincial Teams over the years, Westbrook looks to carry his team to the Provincials. Wellington loses their 2 All-star Seniors but return a couple of key players in Dustin Carver and Russ McCann. The North Division sends the Top 4 teams to the Island Playoffs with the 5th team playing a wildcard game to qualify. 1 of Vanier, Wellington, and Dover Bay will sneak into the Provincial Tournament as the 3rd and final Provincial berth.
Vancouver Island South
1. Claremont Spartans
2. Oak Bay Bays
3. Mt. Douglas Rams
4. Stelly's Stingers
Claremont is the top team to come out of the the Lower Island Division this year featuring a couple of top Provincial players in Eric Casey and Braydon Janzen. The Oak Bay Bays are also a top ranked team looking to return to the Provincials led by Elliot Rushton and returning starter Jeff Cummings. The Top 3 teams from the Lower Island qualify for the Island Playoffs with the 4th place team playing a wildcard to qualify. Overall, expect Claremont and Oak Bay to earn berths in this years Provincial Tournament.
