Day 2 Recap
Round 2 recap on DRIVE
This year's Sweet 16 would produce 4 absolute blowouts, 3 pretty close games, and 1 absolute gem. I'm gonna keep my comments short and sweet as I'm dead tired. Let's roll...
Maple Ridge Ramblers vs Cowichan Thunderbirds
Jared Casey was the difference today, made the big baskets down the stretch to take this game. Both were pretty even all the way through. Mitch Holloway for the Thunderbirds was killer from downtown. I still think Casey takes too many fadaways, and hooks. He's so much bigger than everyone in this league, he should be throwing it down. Kits will be a stretch, Casey needs to own Woodham to have a shot at it.
Pinetree Timberwolves vs Churchill Bulldogs
Love the way the Bulldogs play despite the loss. They play with pure hustle, you don't see many teams play and be successful these days playing that way, it's simply too much work and most teams would rather just give up if they don't have the talent, not the Bulldogs. Aneetan Braich is an absolute stud, what else can you say. He is the only player I saw play today that was constantly booed everytime he touched the ball. And the more they booed, the more he stuck it in your face.
St. George's Saints vs Gleneagle Talons
Give the Talons credit, they stayed with the best team in the province for at least 1 half. That's until Bol Kong made it his personal playground. This guy is sick, the dunks and blocks are out of this world. He really is half-man, half-amazing. If you've never seen him play live, I suggest you do it this week, he's more than worth the price of admission. Alex Murphy didn't have his best game, he was trying to pass too much while he was in the air.
Handsworth Royals vs Magee Lions
I knew this was going to be a snoozer so I went and grabbed lunch in between games. Caught the 2nd half, too bad Sacre was basically done, Royals up 30+ with 15 minutes still to go. The Royals go into a very dangerous game tomorrow against Pinetree. I saw Coach Storey scout the game so they're definitely taking them seriously. The Royals have not played a significant game in a long time, you almost wonder if they are even more susceptible to getting taken. I guess we'll find out tomorrow. If Braich ends up checking Sacre, their strategy may be to get Braich into foul trouble.
Kitsilano Blue Demons vs Centennial Centaurs
This was suppose to be the year of the Centaur, 2004 Junior Provincial Champions. As good as they were early in the year, they simply fell apart to end the season. Confused, lack of focus, apathetic, they just never seemed to get it together after the "incident". And I've been down on Samra, and after watching today, I can't back down on it, he's simply way too soft. A couple of Kits players ripped the ball right out of his hands. What happened to the football in him?
Kits is simply taking care of business, and business is good. They actually catch a break with Oak Bay losing, now it's Brookswood or Pitt. Maple Ridge could be tough, but Woodham is more than capable of forcing Casey to take fadaways. Ridge will not be able to contain either Cochran or Nurse. Cochran by the way, was a perfect 11 of 11 from the field. Just shot lights out. WOW, that's all I have to say about that.
GP Vanier Towhees vs WRCA Warriors
Game of the Tournament, game of the year. 3OT, just amazing. Unfortunately, the Warriors won't have any energy left for St. George's tomorrow. Dekoster played 51 minutes, Adam Stewart 48 min, and Matt Wirch 51 minutes. They's gonna be sore tomorrow.
I still can't believe how good the Warriors are for their age. Because of fouls in the 3OT period, the Warriors had 2 Gr 10 and 1 Gr 8 in the game. That's crazy, and they won the game. They most likely won't win tomorrow, but imagine how good this team is going to be next year, top 3 no doubt.
Westbrook had the game of his life. Played all 55 minutes, scoring 52 points. He really did it all for the Towhees today. Westbrook is a great scorer, but I don't think he's athletic enough to really do well in the US. To be really good, you have to play above the rim, and that's not the way Westbrook plays.
Brookswood Bobcats vs Killarney Cougars
This one will be real short. Malish good, Killarney not. Brookswood is peaking right now, with Pitt Meadows up next instead of Oak Bay, they should get to semis pretty easily. Killarney is just not a very good team, I mean they barely beat Kelly Road. I like Tony Otim's game, but the Cougars don't use him nearly as much as they should.
Oak Bay Bays vs Pitt Meadows Marauders
Just a hard luck game for Oak Bay. I really think the 1 hour delay hurt them more than Pitt. The Bays travelled from the Island and all the waiting and watching games probably made them restless. The Marauders probably relaxed at home and only came out around 4 or 5 pm and were fresher. I couldn't believe how the Bays just couldn't put the ball in the hoop. They missed layups, and put backs, it was just heartbreaking. The Marauders weren't exceptional, but they played their game and made their shots. Brookswood will be very tough for Pitt, Malish will be difficult to contain.
