AAA Power Rankings Week 1

Last Updated Dec 11, 2005

Wow, what a week, HSBC Classic was great. Top 4 switch a little bit but I think they will stay like this for quite a while.

Will update this on a weekly basis, most likely every Sun. Think your team should be higher, or included in the Power Rankings?? Send me an take at BCSportsFanatic@yahoo.ca

01. Saint George's Saints (2)
Convincing win over Centennial and OT winner over Handsworth in the final mean they are the team to beat. Any doubts about Kong's injury were emphatically answered this week. Another win over Centennial in their own tournament this coming weekend should keep them #1 for at least 1 more month.

02. Handsworth Royals (4)
Rely heavily on Sacre, but have shown great resiliency to come from behind when down. Still a little too inconsistent to be #1, the Royal's younguns are improving, in time for Provincials?? We'll see. After a busy last 2 weeks with NSIT and HSBC, will have most of the rest of Dec off before resuming in Jan (probably a fun field trip to San Diego for Christmas is my guess).

03. Centennial Centaurs (1)
Couldn't hold the #1 spot. A result of too many games in a row. After winning 6 straight games, they lost their 7th in 8 nights to St. George's in the semis, and followed that up 2 days later with a close loss to Kitsilano (a team they beat 1 week earlier). League play starts Tue against Best, then St. George's Tournament where they will most likely play St. George's again in the final.

04. Kitsilano Blue Demons (3)
Kitsilano finished 3rd at HSBC beating Centennial in the consolation game. After beating Handsworth less than 1 week earlier, they lost big to the Royals in the Semis at HSBC. When you live and die by the 3 pointer, you will have off nights. League play starts with Van Tech on Mon, then an exhibition game vs WRCA on Tue before Christmas holidays.

05. Brookswood Bobcats (5)
Lost to Dover Bay with Malish sitting out midway with an injury. After beating 2 weaker opponents, lost to Centennial in the Quarters of HSBC. League play starts with Walnut Grove and Yale twice this week.

06. Claremont Spartans (6)
Claremont idle again, not sure when we'll see them before January. Volleyball is done so Casey and Janzen are not full-time on basketball.

07. Dover Bay Dolphins (8)
Beat Brookswood this week, albeit without Malish for most of the game, still is significant. Beat Ballenas in league action as well. Waiting to see a Dover/Claremont matchup. Don't think we'll see that until playoffs though. More league action with Nanaimo coming up.

08. Maple Ridge Ramblers (9)
Won the Walnut Grove Tournament beating Pitt in the finals. Could they be better than Brookswood in FV?? Maybe... looking good so far though. Could crack the top 5 in Jan. Mouat Tournament coming up next.

09. Carson Graham Eagles (10)
Was idle this week after coming in 2nd in last weekend's NSIT. Lyn Chan was profiled in the Province last week, getting plenty of air-time right now, can they live up to the hype?? We'll see, the Handsworth/Carson matchup in Jan is already the "match of the year" according to the Province, being broadcast on MOJO. Won't hear much from them until after the new year when their game action resumes.

10. Pitt Meadows Marauders (12)
Lost to Ridge again, this time at the Walnut Grove Tournament. Along with Fox, keep slipping. Are Pinetree, Gleneagle and Port Moody better?? Possibly, wouldn't be suprised if they move up and Pitt moves down.

11. Killarney Cougars (7)
Either Pinetree is that good, or Killarney is not nearly as good as we all think. I'm guessing a little of both. Killarney is a top 10 team, but toughness could be an issue. League play resumes this week with Thompson and Britannia coming up. In the New West Tournament this coming weekend, need to win it with ease to prove they are contenders.

12. Belmont Bulldogs (14)
Was idle this week but move up due to a couple of teams moving down. Still living off the high of a good NSIT showing. May drop when the reality hits them, we'll see in Jan if they are a top 10 or HM team.

13. GP Vanier Towhees (15)
Westbrook and Company easily dominated their own tournament over the weekend with easy wins over Elgin Park and Cedar. Carihi in league play coming up this week, then Christmas holidays in California, have fun Cal...

14. Oak Bay Bays (11)
Played in the Cowichan Tournament over the weekend, not sure how they did but the field was relatively weak. Will be in a dogfight come playoff time in the Islands. Good news apparently is that all their players are back and healthy which should help for the stretch run.

15. Pinetree Timberwolves (NR)
Good showing at HSBC staying with Kits in the Quarters and huge win over Killarney in the 2nd round bumps them into the top 15. If they continue their strong play, could move up higher than Pitt. A lot of size and toughness all around. League play starts with Westview on Tue.

HM: Gleneagle, WRCA, Wellington, Port Moody, Terry Fox, Kelowna, North Delta
Gleneagle looked impressive at HSBC going to the Quarters, losing to Handsworth by less than 10. WRCA beat Fox handily, rumors abound that Jordan Mara has quit, could drop from here. Wellington was at Cowichan tournament, not sure how well they did. Port Moody was decent at HSBC. Fox dropping like a rock, can't buy a win right now. Kelowna and North Delta remain status quo.

Killarney is overrated.
They only seem good because they have good condition for full-court pressure, but a strong fast-break team can destroy them.

BC Sports Fanatic,

You need to get your facts straight. First of all Dover, Belmont, Oak Bay, Wellington and Claremont were in the Cowichan tourney. It is a pretty good tourney. The island will be one of, if not, the toughest region vying for Provincial berths. Throw in G.P. Vanier and you have an ultra competitive region for 2 berths.

I also believe that the twin towers for Claremont played this weekend and they won the Cowichan tourney.

Wellington, Kelowna, Port Moody, North Delta all overrated and shouldn't be there

I have seen island teams Wellington and G.P Vanier. They are both top 10. I think Calvin Westbrook is the best high school guard since Steve Nash.

Thursday Night at Handsworth is the Alumni Game.

Some big names in town to play the SR Royals.
Potter, Kepkay, Sponanski, Lenerduzzi etc. 7:30pm.

Oh and Handsworth is off until After Christmas Break then they head back to the B.R.I.T. to defend their title.

ohh I watched the semi finals of last years provincials, and that kepkay guy was just awesome. He did it all, score.. pass.. rebound.. great on defense too. Without him, Handsworth wouldn't have finished nearly as high as they did.

Anyone know where he is now?

all teams have bad days..i think if they can pull it together they can do alot.

ND has never been a good first half team. They always pick it up 2nd half and make there late season runs when it matters. All ND teams have been like that dating back for years
