2005 AA Preview

Well, a little late but here is the preview for the 2005/2006 AA Season. I've gathered as much information as possible but as most of the best AA teams are not located in the Lower Mainland, I will have to rely on information that is sent to me to base my opinions on.

The AA Rankings are also up now. Also, Doerksen fans will enjoy this article.

Fraser Valley

East – Hope, DW Poppy, Langley, RE Mountain, Hatzic, HD Stanford
North – Aldergrove, Archbishop Carney, Heritage Park, Mission, Thomas Haney
South – Fraser Valley Christian, Pacific Academy, Holy Cross, Johnston Heights, Clayton Heights, Southridge

Projected Provincial berths: Hope

Hope should come out of the Fraser Valley as the top team in AA this year. The Mustangs are led by Forward Eric Williams and have a good core of returning players. They can score buckets in bunches. DW Poppy made Provincials last year and is the early favorite to contend. Could be a couple of sleepers from the rest of the Valley teams.

Lower Mainland

Howe Sound – Collingwood, Sentinel, Sutherland, Windsor, St. Thomas Aquinas, Howe Sound, Rockridge, Elphinstone, Chatelech, Seycove
Independents/Vancouver – St Thomas More, Notre Dame, King George
Richmond – McMath, Steveston, McNair

Projected Provincial berths: St. Thomas More, Notre Dame

The easy favorite from the Lower Mainland is STM. U16 Provincial Players Denny Dumas and Karol Cybula lead the way. Dumas is a great talent and can take over a games all by himself. Cybula is a decent prospect but needs to work on bulking up. Notre Dame features a lineup of football turned basketball players. The Jugglers made the provincials last year and should return. A couple of intriguing teams that could contend include Collingwood, Sentinel, and McMath.

Vancouver Island

Central – Brentwood, Chemainus, Frances Kelsey, Gulf Islands, Shawnigan Lake
Lower – Lambrick Park, St. Micheal’s, Edward Milne, Parkland, Reynolds
North – Ladysmith, Cedar, John Barsby, Kwalikum, Woodlands, Mark Isfield

Projected Provincial berths: Ladysmith, Lambrick Park

Ladysmith features a new transfer in Spencer Fyfe-Wilson, aka the BEAST. Fyfe is an animal on the boards and has incredible leaping ability. Lambrick Park loses Charlie Spurr but brother Cam Spurr looks to lead the way. The Lions have decent size and should be competitive enough to return to Provincials. Cedar are the defending champs and could get ranked depending on how they start the season.

Okanagan

North – Clarence Fulton, Kalamalka, Vernon, AL Fortune, Charles Bloom, Pleasant Valley, Revelstoke, WL Seaton
South – Summerland, Princess Margaret, Southern Okanagan
West – Westsyde, Sa-hali, Valleyview, Brocklehurst, Merritt, North Kamloops

Projected Provincial berths: Fulton, Westsyde

The Okanagan will be one of the most competitive zones with top-ranked Fulton and Westsyde looking to battle for tops in the Region. Westsyde returns several starters. Fulton returns Jesse Brown and Levi Brodland coming off a solid Football season. The Maroons finished 3rd in last year's provincials and could go all the way this year with the experience they have.

North Central

Duchess Park, DP Todd, College Heights, Columneetza, Correlieu, Fort Nelson, Lakes District, Mackenzie, Nechako Valley, Peter Skene Ogden, Quesnel, Williams Lake

Many are predicting that Duchess Park should be ranked #1 and stay there for the whole season. The Condors feature U16 Provincial Player Nathan Yu and welcome new transfer Paul Burkholder at Forward/Center. DP Todd looks to return to the Provincials and they return several players heading into the season and does College Heights.

North West

Prince Rupert, Charles Hays, Hazelton, Mount Elizabeth, Smithers

Prince Rupert will win the North West easily and many think Connor Agnew and the Rainmakers are the pre-season favorites to win the Provincial Championship. The Rainmakers finished 7th in last year's Provincial Tournament.

a couple of changes I'm sure you weren't aware of: in the Valley Johnston Heights and Clayton Heights have been forced to move up to AAA because of population, and St. Pats has been moved up to 2A for the same reason in the mainland. Also, I believe north shore gets there own berth to BC's as 2A

howe sound has 1.333 berths, Howe Sound 2 plays Mainland 2 and the winner of that goes to provincials and plays the day before against I think its North Central 2 for the berth but im not positive which zone they play the day before.

The 1.33 was the system they used last year, but that can change depending on the number of schools playing 2A in each zone e.g., the Fraser Valley is down a few teams so they may likely lose the 3rd berth they had last year.

You should probably do some research into Princess Margaret from the South Ok. They just won a tournament in Grand Forks. They are very competitive.

AA St Thomas More Collegiate with their awesome captains holding the fort down, Denny Dumas, Sam Carino and Matthew Sung. Karol Cybula had a great game against St. Patricks of Vancouver, beating them by 25 points
STMC is off to the 2nd round tomorrow against most likely Steveston Secondary of Richmond.

From the OK it was Sa Hali , Westsyde and Fulton. i don't think that Fulton however deserves to be there.
